Special Olympics

"Let me win, but if I cannot win let me be brave in my attempt." This is the actual oath all Special Olympic athletes take before they compete in their Games.

Special Olympics began in the early 1960s, in the state of Massachusetts. The games and events were primarily funded by the Kennedy Family. The person who spearheaded this was Eunice Kennedy Schriver, who later became its first president. Because of the success of the activities and games they decided to expand the program. In 1967, some 41 years ago, Sargent Schriver approached the State Deputy of the State of Massachusetts and simply asked if the Knights of Columbus would be interested in helping Special Olympics. Sargent Schriver was a member of the Order. Since that first request until the present time Knights have donated over $430 million along with millions of volunteer man hours. The Knights of Columbus were among the very first sponsors to support Special Olympics.

Special Olympics of Utah (SOUT) provides an environment where people with disabilities can compete safely. Activities and games are held throughout the year, starting with local games, then area games, and finally four statewide games in Ogden, Provo, Salt Lake City, and Logan. Athletes are then selected to compete regionally, nationally, and yes, even internationally. Competing in Special Olympics provides athletes more confidence and self-esteem. They fit into the workforce and society more easily. Almost 60% of those who participate hold a regular or part-time job.

Each year Knights of Columbus members within the State of Utah participate at many events. Color Guards from the Fourth Degree proudly represent the Order at the Opening Ceremonies for the Fall, Winter, and Summer Games. At these events thousands of Special Olympic athletes receive High-Fives and congratulations. Councils, Assemblies and individual members have made monetary donations to sponsor athletes. They also have held fund raising activities, been score keepers, presenters, worked venues, assisted at games, as well as participated at torch runs. Last year, seventeen Councils and one Assembly were involved in some type of activity for Special Olympics.

An opportunity is waiting out there for you to get involved and support these athletes who give it their all. All Knights are asked to support Special Olympics through their donations and participation in Special Olympic activities or by just proudly wearing their Knights of Columbus apparel and cheering the athletes on. All games are free to watch, so by all means bring your families. This is really good stuff; you will feel proud to be a Knight of Columbus.

The athletes need your support. The cost of competing is not free; support for one athlete in Utah for a full year costs $235. Every dollar raised stays within the State of Utah. Donations in any amount will be accepted. Send your donations to:
